Saints & Sinners Itinerary
April 12th-14th, 2024
This three-day experience is a journey through the ancient and modern center of Napoli to explore the mix of the sacred and profane that make it one of the most magical cities in the world.
Friday, April 12th
Though Napoli counts 53 patron saints, there is only one who is revered by millions of Neapolitans all over the world: San Gennaro. We begin our weekend at the Duomo, in the votive chapel dedicated to him and decorated in a Baroque fashion that befits this adored miracle maker. From San Gennaro we move to a Caravaggio masterpiece that we will juxtapose against two contemporary street art pieces celebrating both men. We will then visit a space dedicated to a woman—Santa Lucia—where we will explore the crypts and shrines below ground where we can experience Napoli’ s relationship between the living and the dead, the seen and unseen.
Saturday, April 13th
We start our day with a striking example of the sacred and profane in Piazza Bellini where we will visit with some of our favorite Madonna shrines flanked by some of the most provocative street art featuring famed footballer Maradona. After, we will zig-zag through the alleyways of the historic center as we make our way to visit two incredible sacred sites. First up is the Cristo Velato, located in its home of the sublime and alchemical Cappella Sansevero with its exceptional High Baroque masterpieces, the Veiled Christ and its pendant, Veiled Truth.
Then we will continue on to Purgatorio all’Arco, where we will experience a space once dedicated to a uniquely Neapolitan ritual between the living and the dead that is still practiced today.
We will be in the heart of the city, so after lunch we’ll stick to the streets and soak up that vibrant Neapolitan daily life playing out right in front of our eyes as we navigate the famous Spaccanapoli street and make our way over to the city’s famous Quartieri Spagnoli (Spanish Quarter). Here it’s all about street art where we will connect the past to the present through several striking pieces and dive deep into the numerous shrines to both saints and human heroes like Maradona and Totò that line the streets.
Sunday, April 14th
This morning is all about exploring Rione Sanità, where sumptuous Baroque architecture, bustling markets, incredible street art, plentiful votive shrines, and surprising Greek-era archeology collide in one of Napoli’s most vibrant neighborhoods. Weaving our way through past and present we explore both the history and the amazing contemporary art scene that is truly changing the face of the city.
